Formed in 1939 as Food Stamps and renamed as SNAP or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program this anti-hunger program has been serving American families, children, the elderly, and veterans for decades.
The House Reconciliation Bill now being considered in the Senate, often referred to more accurately as the Big Ugly Bill, includes a reduction in SNAP benefits of $267 Billion over the next ten years. This is the largest cut in the history of anti-hunger programs.
SNAP helped 581,600 South Carolina residents or 11% of the state population (1 in 9) in 2024.
Participant distribution in South Carolina was as follows:
Rural: one in 5 households
Small Town: one in 7 households
Metro Area: one in 11 households
% of households with children: 51.5%
Veterans: 21,309
Senators Tim Scott and Lindsey Graham who are supposed to be representing South Carolina should know these numbers and should be protecting our fellow citizens.
Your call to action: call them through the Senate Switchboard 202-224-3121 to express your displeasure at this cut to SNAP. Be prepared to get a recording but do have your opinion heard.
No one should be complicit in taking food away from more than half a million people to support a tax cut for the wealthy!
This is very useful information.
